Principal's Report

Education and Book Week

We have enjoyed a number of events involving parents, carers and community on site. Our Education Week open day was an exciting opportunity for parents and carers to visit classrooms, to hear about the learning taking place and to connect with other community members. Our Ignite-a-thon was a huge success with students working hard to complete the speedy round of activities. Thank you to everyone for the generous donations that have now raised over $10,000 for our school resources.

Book Week was a fantastic opportunity to recognise the importance of reading and to celebrate the creativity, imagination and achievements of our students. Despite the rainy weather, the Book Week parade was a highlight. The costumes were so creative and imaginative, and it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces bringing favourite book characters to life.

Fireworks fundraiser

The fireworks event was a real showcase of our strong sense of community last weekend. Students had an opportunity to shine through the various music and dance performances, and this year’s fireworks display was an impressive way to end the day. This event would not have been possible without the effort and dedication of the many parent volunteers. I want to acknowledge Nadia (mother of Alyssa in 5/6D and Maya in 3K) and our P&C members who were key in leading this major event. Thank you all! Check out P&C's photos below and look out for future updates on how much money the event raised for our school.

Mayor for a day

Our student leaders were invited to the Ryde Council Chambers to participate in ‘Mayor for the Day’ alongside students from several schools. They learned how the mayor’s office operates, put forward their own notion for discussion and shared opinions on other notions that involved a range of community matters, such as pedestrian crossings, shade sails and community gardens. Thank you to Mayor Trenton Brown for this opportunity for our students to learn more about leadership and local governance.

Green Thumbs and sustainability focus

A large number of students expressed interest in attending our new gardening club – Green Thumbs. As we head into Spring, this will be a big help to better utilise our garden spaces whilst cultivating curiosity, teamwork and insight into where our food comes from. Thank you to Mr W and Mrs Larsen for their leadership of this, with the support of parent community members.

In addition, members of our Sustainability and Environment Ministry have been working closely with Mrs Galati to lead sustainability efforts at school. Initiatives include ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’, using the Return and Earn bins and weekly composting (see more information from the team below). We appreciate your support with these important initiatives.

Connecting to Country

On Monday, Jack (5/6P) and Miss Cini-Powell joined students from across Sydney to attend a Connecting to Country excursion at Taronga Zoo. The day was all about making connections and learning about First Nations histories and cultures. We look forward to future opportunities to build on these connections with peers across the network.

SASS Recognition Week

Next week is SASS Recognition Week, a special time dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of our School Administrative and Support Staff.

At Eastwood Heights PS, these dedicated professionals are the backbone of our school, ensuring everything runs smoothly, supporting both students and teachers in countless ways.

From our School Administrative Manager, Business Manager, School Administrative Officers, General Assistant and School Learning Support Officers, each role is vital to our school community’s success. Students and staff will take the opportunity to express their gratitude for all the hard work, commitment and vital support they provide every day.

Spelling Bee

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Moa (4K) and Golden (5/6S) who competed in the Spelling Bee finals. Their impressive spelling skills and determination shone throughout the competition. Well done to both and thank you to Ms Hull for coordinating this opportunity.

Performance evening: musicals and movies!

You will have received information about our performance evening at 6pm on Wednesday 17 September at Epping West Public School. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted permission and purchased tickets. Please return this information, even if your child is unable to attend, so that we can plan for the event. Students have been rehearsing dance routines in their weekly Dance2bFit lessons and each class is excited to showcase on the night. More specific details for the evening will be sent out via email closer to the date. We hope to see you there!

Zone Athletics Carnival

Thanks to the commitment of Mrs Galati, Ms Hull and Miss Simpson, who persisted through the numerous park closures, we were able to hold a carnival just in time to form a zone team! Well done to all the students that represented our school proudly last week at the Zone Carnival. A big shout out to Noah (3G), Erin (5/6D), Lily-Eve (5/6S) and Alena (5/6S) who have progressed to Regional Athletics later this term. Faced with several cancellations, we opted for competitors only to assist with the planning. However, we do intend for the Athletics Carnival to be open to all students again next year. Thank you to all parents and carers that gave up time to support these events. Our K-2 students are ready and excited for their carnival at school on Monday.

Kindergarten 2026 – enrol now!

We have enjoyed meeting our Kindergarten 2026 students and their families through our 1:1 meetings, school tours and story sessions with Mrs Sparrow. If you have a child, or if you know of anyone with a child, starting school next year – see our school website for information on how to enrol and to find information about our Kindergarten Orientation program.

Achievements outside of school

After a state-wide audition process involving more than 1,000 students from across NSW, Amiliya (5/6H) was selected as one of the top 20 finalists in the OSIC (One School International Championship) Drum Competition. The final was held on Saturday 23 August and brought together some of the most talented young drummers of her age group. Amiliya demonstrated her commitment by showing up at school afterwards to perform with the band at our fireworks event. Well done, Amiliya!

I hope to see you at our P&C Father’s Day Breakfast next Friday morning.

Stage 3 - Spotlight On Learning

English – characterisation

As part of the English units of work this term, Stage 3 students have been diving into the world of Wonder, exploring rich characterisation that brings the story to life. Through reading and writing activities, they have developed a deeper understanding of the characters’ personalities, motivations and growth. This focus has inspired thoughtful discussions and creative responses, including various art works, enhancing their appreciation of literature and storytelling skills. Written responses show how students are deepening their understanding and demonstration of ‘point of view’ within text creation.

Science

Students have been engaged in exciting science investigations, exploring key concepts through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning. Their curiosity and teamwork have driven thoughtful observations and discoveries, deepening their understanding of the scientific process. We’re proud of their enthusiasm and commitment to learning!

Sustainability And Environment Ministry

This term, the sustainability ministry has been working hard to keep our school clean and sustainable.

Composting

Composting has been conducted every Friday to collect food scraps from classrooms. The compost is then used to create fertilizer for our school.

Sustainability Checklists

Sustainability checklists will be given to all classes that do not have one and the sustainability ministry could hopefully start conducting spot checks.

The pink bins are for bottles with a 10¢ refundable mark on them ONLY. Bottles with no mark cannot be placed in the pink bins. Some acceptable drinks that can be placed in are ChillJ soda and Up&Go. If your drink carton or bottle has the refund symbol (image provided below), you are allowed to place your drink into a pink bin. Bottles are collected by the council and the money refunded will go towards the school. If you wish to donate bottles to the school, make sure that the container has the 10¢ mark to the school feel free to send them in.

Recycling

5/6D have been working hard to recycle the recyclable waste our schools produce, this includes paper items. The recycling is collected and recycled to be reused as new pieces of paper.

Waste Free Wednesday

The Waste Free Wednesdays program will hopefully start off soon. Students will try to not bring any waste (e.g. crisp packets and cling wrap) to school. Here are some ideas to contribute to a Waste Free Wednesday.

  • Use sandwich containers instead of cling wrap
  • Pour out the chips into a separate plastic container to reduce waste at school.

Thank you for your support in keeping EHPS sustainable.

3-6 Athletics Carnival

After a number of unavoidable postponements, our 2025 athletics carnival finally happened. On Friday 15th August.Even though it had to be a competitors only carnival, due to  time constraints and field availability, those that participated put in a fantastic effort.

Over 130 children competed at Chatswood Memorial athletics field Together with the field events that were completed at school on Monday 11th August, we were able to put together  a strong Zone team of 38 children.
Congratulations to the children who succeeded in their events to make a final, and to the place getters in each final.
Although it almost took 3 weeks, the children of Eastwood Heights did it, and with smiles.
All the best to those heading off to Regionals on 22/9/25.

Band

Congratulations to all the Eastwood Heights Public School bands for your excellent performance at the firework. You have made great progress over the past year in performing more repertoire that is more challenging. The jazz band featured some impressive, improvised solos, and it was a pleasure to hear the Jazz Workshop perform after the jazz band to show the potential that your child can achieve on their chosen instrument. With dedication, you could soon be tackling advanced improvisation solos too. Training band well done on a great job- hitting all the right notes at your first fireworks performance.

Thank you to everyone who helped move equipment between the band room and the hall. Your support is greatly appreciated by the musicians and the school community.
